Varsity Cup – TUKS Showed Promise But Beware Of CUT

As with the Young Guns competition, everything went as expected with the big game between Maties and Wits delivering the goods. Ikeys were the only team being able to score a bonus point and are currently at number 1 on the log with 5 points with TUKS, Maties and NWU on 4 points. Shimlas had a bye this week.

Tuks 23 - 6 CUT

CUT surprised everybody in the manner they came out on the pitch and took TUKS on. They were dominant in the scrums earning 4 penalties from the first 4 scrums. CUT scored the first points after 15 minutes after a Marc Morrison penalty. The rest of the first half saw a titanic battle with CUT slowing down the game and TUKS who kept on attacking with their bigger and more physical forwards.  TUKS lead 8-3 at half time.

The second half CUT showed everytime that when I expected the dam wall to burst they kept TUKS from scoring with absolute amazing defence. However, the holes had to appear and two splendid tries by winger Ciaran Dayaram and inside centre Wian van Niekerk sealed the game for TUKS.

Somewhat surprisingly CUT refused 9 points in kickable penalties during the game, sometimes earning confidence in the manner you play must not lead to stupidity in not taking every point available in such a close game. TUKS, on the other hand, will have to speak to fullback Damian Bonaparte and wing Ciaran Dayaram who on several occasions in the first half decided to go infield with a man over on their outside that cost them at least two certain tries.

The name of Tinus de Beer must be mentioned for the manner in which he controlled the game with his boot for TUKS while captain courageous, Rayno Nel from CUT showed his injury is of the past and lead his team from the front for a full 80 minutes.

Hats of to a gutsy performance by CUT who did not give up for the full 80 minutes and who will surprise one or two more fancied sides in 2019. TUKS showed they possess of some exciting talent that will tear other teams apart during this season. Maybe still one or two issues to solve but the could not have asked for a better start of the season against a tough opponent. An exciting game to watch.
